How Ugandans could position themselves in to decent work

During the recent budget reading for FY 2019/2020, increased unemployment, income inequality and unhealthy lifestyles topped the development challenges distressing Uganda.

During the recent budget reading for the Financial Year 2019/2020, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development Hon. Matia Kasaija highlighted that the increased rate of unemployment, income inequality and living unhealthy lifestyles had topped the development challenges distressing the country.

With a young and growing population, Uganda faces the urgent challenge of creating sufficient decent work opportunities. The informal sector continues to absorb the majority of workers, often under conditions that fall short of international labour standards.

Positioning for decent work requires a multi-pronged approach: investment in skills development, strengthening of labour market institutions, promotion of entrepreneurship, and ensuring that economic growth translates into quality employment opportunities for all Ugandans.
