Platform for Labour Action celebrates a remarkable 25-year history of advocating for worker rights in Uganda. The organization focuses on defending vulnerable groups and addressing labour injustices, with particular emphasis on safe migration.
According to Lydia Bwiite, Manager for Rights, Social Protection, and Accountability at PLA, "labour migration comes with many risks: exploitation, unsafe working conditions, human trafficking, and the denial of basic rights" affecting migrant workers, particularly women.
PLA's approach combines legal aid, psychosocial support for exploitation victims, community awareness about safe migration, and policy advocacy aligned with ILO conventions.
25 Years of Accomplishments
The organization's quarter-century of work includes:
- Policy reform benefiting migrant workers
- Legal empowerment through aid clinics
- Nationwide awareness campaigns
- Partnership building with unions and government agencies
- Economic empowerment for survivors
Looking Forward
Looking forward, PLA commits to addressing emerging challenges including digital recruitment scams, climate-induced migration, and labour informalization, envisioning a Uganda where migration remains safe and inclusive while protecting all workers' rights.
